Qualification description

 

This qualification reflects the role of individuals working as developing and emerging leaders and managers in a range of enterprise and industry contexts. As well as assuming responsibility for their own performance, individuals at this level provide leadership, guidance and support to others. They also have some responsibility for organising and monitoring the output of their team. They apply solutions to a defined range of predictable and unpredictable problems, and analyse and evaluate information from a variety of sources.

Entry requirements:

 

There are no formal requirements to gain entry into this qualification, however our workshops are aimed at participants who have workplace experience in supervising, leading and managing teams in a variety of contexts.

 

Many students enter this qualification without holding existing qualifications. As the programs are designed based upon the work environment, experience within that environment is an acceptable point of entry.

 

The Certificate IV in Leadership and Management may include but not limited to experience within a leadership environment, or another closely related field, this may be either as a team member, supervisor or leading hand. This course also requires that you have sound language and literacy skills, and basic word processing.

 

As this is a course that requires the use of a computer, knowledge of basic computer skills are essential. You will also need to be able access to a workplace to complete the workplace based assessments.

 

To support your studies you will be provided with qualified trainers, all learning materials, flexible delivery options, telephone and email support.

This program requires a significant amount of reading and writing.You will need:
  • Language and literacy skills at a level that enables you to access, interpret, understand and use WHS information and data (including legislation, regulations and other guidance materials) and to write succinct policies, procedures, plans and reports
  • Numeracy skills at a level that enables you to read and understand managerial performance indicators and related statistics and measurements, and to allocate timeframes, and financial and other resources required to implement plans
  • Technology skills to conduct online research using a web browser (e.g. Internet Explorer, Firefox) and to use a variety of software applications to read PDF files (e.g. Adobe), produce documents (e.g. Microsoft Word, PowerPoint), and analyse information and data (e.g. Excel)
  • The ability to research information and data: from a variety of sources such as legislation, codes of practice, Australian standards and policy and proceedures.

The Certificate IV in Leadership and Management is offered by us as a comprehensive 8 day face-to-face workshop run at our training centre. As with most courses there are some post course assessments that need to be completed to gain certification. These post course assessments comprise of using the skills and knowlwdge gained on our dynamic course and applying these to your workplace environment.

 

What will you Learn?

 

This qualification supports your first step into management. It will give you a strong foundation if you have leadership aspirations, or if you have found yourself promoted to a supervisory position, it will provide you with all the skills and knowledge necessary to fully develop as an excellent team leader. This course covers team building and leadership skills, implementing operational and strategic plans, analysing and managing risk, and supplier, client and customer relations. This qualification is for people who supervise, lead and manage teams in a variety of contexts including manufacturing, service, retail and wholesale sectors.

Course outline & structure

 

The Certificate IV in Leadership and Management is a fully nationally accredited and nationally recognised training course designed to meet the needs of both business and industry expectations. The Certificate IV in Leadership and Management is comprised of 12 units of competencies,4 core units and 8 electives. This Certificate IV in Leadership and Management course is now the minimum requirement for supervisors.

 

Core units:

 

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to communicate effectively as a workplace leader, including understanding the context, choosing methods of communication to suit the audience, and following up.

This unit applies to managers, supervisors and team leaders required to communicate with other persons within the workplace. Communication skills cover a range of methods and contexts within principally structured environments.

  • BSBLDR401 Communicate effectively as a workplace leader

 

This unit defines skills, knowledge and outcomes required to use leadership to promote team cohesion. It includes motivating, mentoring, coaching and developing the team and forming the bridge between the management of the organisation and team members. This unit applies to team leaders, supervisors and new or emerging managers where leadership plays a role in developing and maintaining effective workplace relationships. It applies in any industry or community context. At this level work will normally be carried out within routine and non-routine methods and procedures, which require planning and evaluation and leadership and guidance of others.

  • BSBLDR402 Lead effective workplace relationships

 

This unit defines skills, knowledge and outcomes required to plan and supervise the performance of the team and develop team cohesion. It applies team leaders, supervisors and new emerging managers who have an important leadership role in the development of efficient and effective work teams. Leaders at this level also provide leadership for the team and bridge the gap between the management of the organisation and the team members. As such they must 'manage up' as well as manage their team/s.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to implement the operational plan by monitoring and adjusting operational performance, planning and acquiring resources and providing reports on performance as required. It applies to individuals who plan activities to achieve the measurable, stated objectives of the team and the organisation. At this level work will normally be carried out within routine and non-routine methods and procedures which require planning, evaluation, leadership and guidance of others.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to implement the organisation’s continuous improvement systems and processes. It covers using systems and strategies to actively encourage the team to participate in the process, monitoring and reviewing performance, and identifying opportunities for further improvements.

It applies to managers who have an active role in implementing the continuous improvement process to achieve the organisation's objectives. Their position is closely associated with the creation and delivery of products and services which means that they have an important role in influencing the ongoing development of the organisation. At this level, work will normally be carried out within routine and non-routine methods and procedures, which require planning, evaluation, leadership and guidance of others.

  • BSBMGT403 Implement continuous improvement

 

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to identify risks and to apply established risk management processes to a defined area of operations that are within the responsibilities and obligations of the role.

It applies to individuals with a broad knowledge of risk analysis or project management who contribute well developed skills in creating solutions to unpredictable problems through analysis and evaluation of information from a variety of sources. They may have responsibility to provide guidance or to delegate aspects of these tasks to others. In this unit, risks applicable within own work responsibilities and area of operation, may include projects being undertaken individually or by a team, or operations within a section of the organisation.

  • BSBRSK401 Identify risk and apply risk management processes

 

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to implement and monitor an organisation’s work health and safety (WHS) policies, procedures and programs in the relevant work area in order to meet legislative requirements. It applies to individuals with supervisory responsibilities for implementing and monitoring the organisation’s WHS policies, procedures and programs in a work area. These individuals have a broad knowledge of WHS policies and contribute well developed skills in creating solutions to unpredictable problems through analysis and evaluation of information from a variety of sources. They provide supervision and guidance to others and have limited responsibility for the output of others.

 

NOTE: The terms 'occupational health and safety' (OHS) and 'work health and safety' (WHS) are equivalent and generally either can be used in the workplace. In jurisdictions where the Model WHS Legislation has not been implemented RTOs are advised to contextualise the unit of competency by referring to the existing State/Territory OHS legislative requirements.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to monitor and obtain feedback on own work performance and access learning opportunities for professional development. This unit applies to individuals who are required to design their own work schedules and work plans and to establish priorities for their work. They will typically hold some responsibilities for the work of others and have some autonomy in relation to their own role.

This unit applies to individuals who may be expected to make presentations for a range of purposes, such as marketing, training and promotions. They contribute well developed communication skills in presenting a range of concepts and ideas.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to determine individual and team development needs and to facilitate the development of the workgroup. It applies to individuals with a broad knowledge of learning and development who apply their skills in addressing development needs to meet team objectives. This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to lead teams and individuals by modelling high standards of conduct to reflect the organisation's standards and values. It applies to individuals who are making the transition from being a team member to taking responsibility for the work and performance of others and providing the first level of leadership within the organisation. These managers have a strong influence on the work culture, values and ethics of the teams they supervise.

Breadth, depth and complexity of knowledge and competencies would cover a broad range of varied activities or application in a wider variety of contexts most of which are compleand non-routine.
